Books: Wicked–Gregory Maguire

Wicked came to me by the time I started to feel identified as one of the Stephen King’s constant readers. Still, though a couples of years have passed, it was until a month ago that I decided to finally take it from my pile of “to-be-read” books and started to read it. What was my first expectation? Terribly boring.

At the barely beginning, we are presented to a world of fantasy that many readers/Michael Jackson followers easily recognize: the Land of Oz.

wickedIt should be noted that by the time I bought this book, I had but the least idea of what it was about, and that when I started reading it, I was terribly confused for the tons of names and places you are supposed to be well-versed in in order to digest this quite complicated piece of work.

Still, that was my first impression. By the time I was turning the last page, I could not love the story more. I must admit I always hated the fact that Dorothy got to be the protagonist, teaching at the same time that good always prevails over evil, which in fact might prove true in the end, but that should not be taken as de facto.

I seriously recommend this novel to any person who is willing to stand 200 initial pages of boring stuff, which could have been dropped without really slaughtering the story, in order to get to a heavily politically influenced plot whose main objective is to refresh the childish, clichéd idea of a world in which the good ones are always the ones by whom we should always feel inspired.

See ya next time?
